Philip Dawson (Audit Quality Leader)

Philip joined Grant Thornton in 2014 as the firm’s Leader – Audit quality. He is a specialist in audit and audit quality control with 20 years’ experience including 7 years as one of Grant Thornton International Limited’s Global quality control specialists.


Born in England, Philip grew up in Nigeria and South Africa. Philip has been involved in the accountancy profession since returning to the UK in 1994. Prior to joining Grant Thornton (Gibraltar) Limited Philip was based in the UK, originally articled to a mid-tier firm, before completing has articles and qualifying with a Big Four audit firm in London. In 2004 Philip joined Grant Thornton International Limited.

At Grant Thornton International Limited Philip spent 3 years as the organisation’s Senior Divisional Manager for Europe, Africa and the Middle East, maintaining the network of independent firms and implementing Grant Thornton International Limited’s growth strategy in the region. Philip then became one of the network’s Global Audit Quality Control Specialist and was responsible for maintaining the network’s Ethics and Quality Control Manual as well as involved in designing, updating and helping to implement the network’s audit quality control inspection programme.

During Philip’s employment with a Big Four firm he managed the audits of a portfolio of 30 inward investment clients in a diverse range of industries.

In Gibraltar Philip works in the audit department, where he is concerned with continually improving the quality and efficiency of the firm’s audit services.

Professional qualifications and memberships

Philip is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. He has a BSc. degree in geology and advanced earth sciences and a BSc. honours degree in geology from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.

Philip is the firm’s representative on the FSC’s Auditors’ Advisory Panel and is a member of the Gibraltar Society of Accountants.
